The value of radio-centred health promotion and social awareness is demonstrated by the Future Beats initiative, which is implemented by student journalists with support from HIGHER HEALTH. Participating stations create programmes to deal with relevant issues and encourage student participation in this discourse, largely through social media.
The initiative involves over 10 campus and community radio stations with an audience of more than 700 000. An evaluation showed Future Beats increased student uptake of health services. Recently Future Beats ran campaigns on PrEP awareness and empowerment of adolescent girls and young women in partnership with the DREAMS Thina Abantu Abasha Programme.
